BioDtect Kits: Rapid and easy method to check if your product is being digested by bacteria.

BioDtect kits can visually detect aerobic microbial activity in water based products, such as coatings, slurries, surfactants, etc, in less than an hour. As aerobic bacteria and fungi grow, they use up dissolved oxygen (DO) from the solution or slurry, as a result the DO level in the liquid will drop. BioDtect kits show this drop in DO, when added to the sample, via an easy to see colour change.

The speed of the colour change is important, the faster the change the higher the microbial activity. If the colour at pH >5 goes from blue or red to colourless within less than 30 minutes in a product, the microbial activity is unacceptably high and the product is probably off.

As a rule of thumb if the material changes colour before the intended shelf life of the product, the preservative/biocide system or its level needs to be reviewed.

NB BioDtect works best on light coloured products, darker colours may hide the colour changes. Confirm results by plating the product.
